[Frameworks] 16mm sound projector speakers

Hey guys -
I have 2 eiki ssl, and 2 bell and howell filmo sound projectors, none of
which came with speakers. I'm trying to project films with sound on them
relatively soon and was wondering if anyone knew what the deal with that
is. What kind of jack is it? I've been googling and yielding no helpful
results. Anyone know where to buy just projector speakers? Or is there an
adaptor for the jack so I can go through an amp?
thanks!
mariah.

Hi Mariah,
The jack out of the projector is typically a standard 1/4" audio jack (not
stereo) where the tip is hot (usually for driving 8ohm speakers) and the
sleeve is ground.
You should be able to safely hook up almost any speaker to it unless its a
powered speaker expecting a line-level signal.

If you are going to go out to a separate amp rather than a speaker you
should run the output through a _very_ simple attenuator circuit to knock
it down to line level:
http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/speaker_to_line.html

If you aren't worried about damaging the amp and/or speakers you are
connecting the projector to, you can also just try connecting it up with
the projector volume set as low as possible - not recommended, but it can
work without smoke ensuing...

These generally DO come with speakers, internal to the projector body. If you're not getting any sound, the problem is more likely the sound circuit of the projector, not the speaker. But as Buck says, the 1/4" jack out is speaker level, and should drive any external speaker, so you can check. Plugging in an external speaker will probabaly mute the internal speaker. I think the SSL may have two jacks, one for a speaker and one for line-level out.

thanks for the input guys. i thought the b+h projectors usually had
speakers on the inside of the cover, but maybe that's not the filmosound?
My eiki's didn't come with covers. Good to know! I'll run some sound film
through to test.

Most of those projectors have a standard 1/4" phone jack on them, which
can drive any 8-ohm speakers. Some of the Bell and Howell machines have
a 0.175" phone jack which is a little smaller and requires a special
connector that you'll have to order from an electronics supplier.

The signal level coming out of there is speaker level, much higher than
the line level you would want to put into an amp although you can buy
a "direct inject" box that will give you a microphone level signal. I
suggest if you want to drive an external amplifier that you have them
modified to give you a proper line output, though, as this will sound a
lot better.

I have had excellent results coming out of projectors by using the 1/4" jack to a DI (stands for Direct Input, I believe) which gives you an XLR output to a sound system, microphone level. Many DI's have a switch to select "Instrument" or "Speaker" levels, coming out of a projector you want to choose Speaker unless otherwise indicated. A good DI (also simply called a Direct Box) is what many guitar and keyboard players use between their instruments and the PA systems they play through. It should also give you a ground lift switch, well worth having for those instances when you want to get rid of a 60 cycle hum.
Scott is right - if you are driving an 8 ohm speaker you don't need anything other than the cable from projector to speaker. But if you are connecting to a sound system (mixer, amplifier, and speakers), get a good direct box. You can find them at any music store that sells electric gear. They now also come with 1/8" and RCA inputs so you can use them to get your iPod, laptop, or CD/DVD player into the sound system cleanly.

Which is pretty much all the time.

Some Eikis have a 3 segment (tip/ring/ground) 1/4" phone jack where
tip/ground gives speaker output and another combination (tip/ring or
ring/ground...) is supposed to give you a line output. I have been able
to get a line level output this way by soldering a custom cable, but it
was always weak and trebly. Speaker out to DI box via 1/4" cable, then
XLR cable to mixer, as several people have suggested, always seems to
sound better.

If you are running through a mixer, start with the projector volume
about halfway and the bass/treble flat (12 o'clock on the Eiki). Adjust
the mixer channel input fader and/or the DI and/or the projector volume
to get a strong, but not clipping, signal at the mixer preamps. I
usually park the bass and treble on the projector at about 10 and 2 to
roll off a bit of rumble and bump the highs, then ride the mixer EQ,
which has a lot more range.
